Frontier: First Encounters - a space based combat, adventure and trading computer game

Frontier: First Encounters (referred to FFE) was the creation of David Braben and Frontier Developments, released in 1995. FFE was the third episode of a series of computer games which began with the legendary game Elite created in 1984 by David Braben and Ian Bell, originally for the Acorn BBC micro. FFE was written for the PC / MSDOS.

You can find out more about the game at Jades.org, including walk through's, mission descriptions, FAQ's, and a wealth of other information.

FFE when released was crippled by several serious bugs. The equally legendary John Jordan broke the code, re-wrote entire sections and not only restored the game to a faithful working version but added numerous improvements and new features, as well as making it run under MSWindows 98/XP.

There are many more developments being worked on, including an OpenGL version. Alioth.net is a vast storehouse of information and further links.

Finally, this brief introduction would not be complete without a link to David Braben's Frontier Developments website where you can find out more about the many projects that have been worked on since - so delaying the release of Elite 4... Frontier Developments http://www.frontier.co.uk/

Work in progress - hacked save files to start you off with a stolen prototype of the Viper III - and a huge criminal record to work off! plus maybe a preview of my huge fan fiction trilogy, working title "So Much For A Short Elite Fan Fiction Story..." :)
